The objective of this research was to evaluate the activity of the prefrontal cortex (PFC) during a motor coordination task and its correlation with motor performance, motor impairment and demographic variables in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). This is a cross-sectional study of 10 individuals with PD who scored between 0 and 3 on the Hoehn & Yahr scale and were taking antiparkinsonian medication. The motor impairment was assessed using Part III of the Movement Disorders Society-Revised Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale, motor performance by the Box and Block Test (BBT), and assessment of PFC activity by hemoencephalography (HEG). We positioned the optodes (sensors) in the FPZ region, on the left (Fp1) and right (Fp2) sides, and measured the optical density (OP) during a training protocol that consisted of three moments: 30 s at initial rest, 60 s performing the motor task, and 30 s at final rest. The three moments were compared using repeated measures analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), followed by Tukey's post-hoc test for multiple pairwise comparisons. We performed a Pearson correlation analysis between all clinical and physiological variables. It was observed that there was a statistically significant difference between the initial rest and activity (p = 0.024), a positive correlation between prefrontal optical density during the test and motor performance (r = 0.63; p = 0.042), and a negative correlation between motor performance and motor impairment (r = -0.69; p = 0.02). In conclusion, individuals with PD had a decrease in PFC activity during a motor coordination task. Furthermore, an increase in PFC activity during the task was associated with better motor performance. In addition, higher motor performance was associated with lower motor impairment in individuals with PD.
