In this chapter, we give a brief introduction to function theory in several complex variables and highlight the key differences between one and several complex variables. Though the development of several complex variables came relatively late compared to one complex variable, it has profoundly influenced modern developments in partial differential equations, harmonic analysis, algebraic geometry, and complex geometry over the last century.
