Police officers are viewed as key personnel in the prevention and response to violence against women and girls (VAWG). An interim report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services noted the need for “…immediate, radical and cross-system action”, to respond to the current “…epidemic of offending against women and girls” (HMICFRS, 2021, p.1). Universities that provide police training programmes are therefore well-positioned to help develop an informed workforce to prevent and respond to VAWG. This chapter showcases research conducted with five students currently on the Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA), to explore how informed they felt about how to respond to VAWG. Three key themes were identified through the research: Understanding of VAWG, Prevalence of VAWG and Responses to VAWG. These themes are discussed in the context of PCDA students’ readiness to respond to VAWG as part of their role, before considering recommendations to help inform police education and practice and to build an informed and effective workforce to prevent and respond to the ever-growing issue of VAWG.
