Defining Key Competencies for Smart and Sustainable Humanitarian Logistics

Fast and effective response is vital in humanitarian logistics operations. The effectiveness and success of these operations depend significantly on the expertise level of the individuals managing the process. Experts in the relevant field believe that professionals rely not just on technical knowledge and abilities but also on multidisciplinary competencies, including interpersonal skills, digital literacy, and sustainability. This study aims to bridge in this literature gap by identifying the key competencies required for professionals in this field through an extensive competency analysis. In this context, this study examines the abilities required by specialists in smart and sustainable disaster logistics. A comprehensive literature analysis and consultations with experts informed the creation of a standardized questionnaire encompassing five fundamental competency domains: interpersonal skills, problem-solving and personality traits, technical skills, functional skills, and digital-green abilities. The results of the structured questionnaire were evaluated with responses from 180 relevant professionals in academia, the commercial sector and NGOs. The results highlight the most critical competencies for professionals in humanitarian logistics, emphasizing the growing importance of digital and green skills. The findings of the study aim to contribute to expanding the curriculum of humanitarian logistics training programs in an accurate and appropriate manner.
