Asynchronous communication is prevalent in digital platforms, including emails, messaging apps, social media, and collaborative tools. While offering flexibility, this communication style often leads to delays in responses, causing miscommunication, reduced engagement, and potential negative impacts on users’ mental and physical well-being. To address these challenges, we introduce the “Mars Button,” a gamification-based solution designed to enhance user engagement in asynchronous communication by awarding badges based on response times. This will not only motivate users to improve their responsiveness but also help them monitor their communication efficiency. The Mars Button concept is useful in scenarios like interplanetary communication, where long delays between Earth and Mars make maintaining motivation and consistent interaction critical. This paper details the design and implementation of the Mars Button, its integration into various communication platforms, and the potential impact on user behavior. Through scenario-based analysis, we explore its applicability in corporate environments, educational settings, freelance work, metaverse platforms, and space missions. We also discuss potential challenges such as user resistance, privacy concerns, and the sustainability of engagement over time. Our discussions suggest that the Mars Button could significantly improve asynchronous communications by making them more engaging and interactive.
