Towards the Integration of Lightweight Components in Cyber-Physical Systems

Development strategies related to the Web of Things (WoT) must address the implementation of specific software artifacts that enable the realization of a WoT architecture and allow things to be executed. These artifacts, named servients, act as a client, a server, or with both roles for interaction with real or virtual devices, i.e., things. In this sense, servients can expose things, consume things, or are intermediaries if they perform both actions. Consequently, servients may include a mechanism for supporting different protocols and communication patterns. This paper presents an approach to implement lightweight WoT servients by reducing the implementation related to the communication protocols of a thing. These servients do not contain any server to expose their interaction affordances; instead, they only contain clients of intermediary brokers that enable communication. Our proposal has been validated with an example scenario consisting of a set of interconnected devices. This scenario includes the integration of real and virtual devices.
