Dealing with the Death of a Patient
摘要
This chapter explores the impact that the death of a patient has on doctors as well as the many ways that doctors process, grieve, and cope with what can be an incredibly challenging experience. We’ll review the literature that illustrates the impact the death of a patient has on clinicians, consider the role of empathy and factors that make certain cases particularly challenging, and explore strategies that I and other doctors use to deal with the death of a patient. This will be done through the lens of an imagined patient that is based on a conglomerate of real cases I’ve experienced in practice.
