Research on Eye Tracking and Experience Perception in the Living Space of Traditional Water Village Settlements

In recent years, the rapid advancement of social development and urbanization has elevated the study of waterscapes in traditional settlements to a critical subject in cultural heritage preservation and ecological construction. To address the challenges of enhancing and protecting the landscape heritage of traditional settlements, analyzing the perception of waterscapes is essential for safeguarding and developing landscape heritage in the Lingnan water network region while maintaining the stability of rural landscape ecology. This study presents findings from an eye-tracking experiment conducted in the waterscape environment of Xiaozhou Village, documenting participants’ visual behavior during evaluation tasks and examining the influencing factors of visual perception in waterscape spaces. The results indicate that vegetation, water quality, and surrounding architectural styles significantly impact visual perception, serving as key factors shaping individuals’ experiential engagement with waterscapes. Additional elements, such as water color, dynamic changes, and pathway width, also guide visual attention. Experimental indices, including average blink duration, average gaze length, and average saccade amplitude, were utilized for data collection, complemented by subjective evaluations gathered through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Statistical methods, visual hotspot mapping, and social network analysis were employed to analyze and visually display the focal points of participants’ visual attention, revealing differences in the visual focus on traditional water ecological landscapes and the similarities and distinctions in the attractiveness of landscape elements. Based on the findings from Xiaozhou Village, this study identifies key indicators for analyzing settlement landscapes and visual perception, focusing on the spatial experience and sustainable management of small-scale settlement lands. By integrating waterscape development strategies, the study enhances the multifunctional value of waterscapes, promotes local economic development, and achieves a balance between cultural preservation and economic benefits. This research provides theoretical foundations and practical guidance for the conservation and development of waterscapes in traditional settlements, outlining a sustainable and high-quality development pathway that aligns with the ecological and cultural values of Lingnan waterscapes.
