In the field of manufacturing assembly and workplace, ergonomics plays a critical role in safeguarding workers’ health while ensuring workers efficiency. Musculoskeletal diseases (MSDs), caused by poor ergonomics in the workspace, are shown to have significant impact on productivity and absences, costing the industry billions yearly as well as human suffering. Simulation of ergonomics through Digital Human Modelling (DHM) has become a key tool for addressing ergonomic challenges early in the design phase of workstations and factories since it enables ergonomic issues to be resolved before production, avoiding costly redesigns and delays. Furthermore, Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool to enhance ergonomic assessments has received increased attention in recent years. To reach its full potential the VR simulations will need to account for multi-stakeholder collaboration through what is referred to as multi-user VR. This study examines the benefits and limitations of VR, particularly multi-user VR, in ergonomic assessments. Interviews with ten experts revealed key limitations as well as potential solutions and future directions for VR and multi-user VR in the field of DHM and ergonomic simulations. A validation case study together with four ergonomics experts was conducted, comparing the ability to collaborate and assess manikin postures though a DHM desktop application, DHM single-user VR application, and a DHM multi-user VR application. The results from the interviews and case study are further discussed and future outlooks of multi-user VR in DHM simulations are presented.
