This chapter provides an overview of the approaches of academics seeking to engage with private, public and community-based stakeholders through transdisciplinary research (TdR) on pressing sustainability challenges, particularly climate change. It outlines aspects of the institutional factors that influence TdR. This book aims to make visible our experience as two early-career researchers setting out to undertake transdisciplinary research for sustainability through collaboration with groups beyond academia. However, in grounding these experiences, we first must situate transdisciplinary practice more broadly. This is done firstly through the literature and secondly through presenting findings from research led by us, whereby we conducted qualitative interviews with more experienced practitioners of such approaches within our own university. These conversations on TdR acted to help us on our way, guide us through our own process, and warn us of potential pitfalls we must try to navigate. They offer a helpful starting point from which we can begin to cover our journey in transdisciplinary practice for sustainability.
