Flight Behavior focuses on the need to combat climate change denial by accepting our responsibility for the next and succeeding generations. The story revolves around the migration of monarch butterflies, which migrate generationally: the monarch that “returns” to Mexico is a fourth-generation butterfly, enabled by ancestors that die along the way. The migration is also resonant for Americans, both in terms of their own history and the Biblical Exodus. Recent analysis of climate-change denial informs a narrative in which the Church combines forces with a protective mother to assure the future of the next generation. In its dynamic, centrifugal structure, the novel takes its characters from local to global, individual to collective, and back, modeling its dynamics on the central image of the migrating butterflies.
