In her later novels, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison created elderly characters who serve as guides and healers for the confused young. This chapter explores wise elders in Morrison’s later fiction who provide generous counsel deriving in part from their own passionate mistakes and losses. Expressing pain and regret, transmuted by effort into pathways to safety for the young, their wisdom gave me a model for becoming a better teacher and mother. Among other wise elders, I consider Baby Suggs from Beloved (1987); Consolata Sosa from Paradise(Toni Morrison) (1997); Florens’s mother from A Mercy (2008); Ethel Fordham from Home (2012); and Queen Olive from God Help the Child (2015).
