Forensic Methods for Detecting Criminal Attacks on Business Models of Industrial Companies Using Artificial Intelligence

The spread of digital technologies as part of Industry 4.0 provides industrial companies with new opportunities for innovative business model transformation, which in turn contributes to their sustainability in today’s socio-economic and technological realities. Innovation in business models not only has the potential to increase the cost efficiency associated with the introduction of new solutions in products and production processes, but can also be a significant competitive advantage that enables organizations to successfully differentiate themselves in an accelerating competitive and rapidly changing business environment. The purpose of the study is to comprehensively analyze the risks of merging artificial intelligence (AI) and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) in order to reconfigure business models of industrial enterprises for increasing their stability in the present economic situation. These devices are designed to interact with each other and with virtual services, enabling them to perform various functions, such as monitoring and controlling various aspects of business. Breakthroughs in AI such as deep learning, generative AI, and other basic models, allow to make business models more sensitive to criminal encroachment as the concept of the integrative AIplus IIoT includes the collection, transmission and storage of a large amount of data of a very different nature, as well as their processing using AI technologies which can be utilized both for legitimate purposes and for malicious activities. AI plus IIoT is a complete ecosystem that, using specific business models, helps an enterprise transform and control changes with great precision. Such technology has found applications in a wide range of industries, including residential buildings, industrial facilities, healthcare systems, transportation networks, and even smart cities as it has the potential to optimize processes, and improve efficiency of industrial cycle. However, the increasing number of interconnected devices also raises concerns about the security of this vast network. There is a need to ensure that these devices are firmly protected from potential cyber threats also associated with artificial intelligence (AI), as any breach could have significant consequences for both individuals and organizations. The authors have established that current business models centered around the IIoT fall short in adequately addressing the risks associated with malicious interference in production processes through the application of AI technologies. It is also anticipated that the scope of criminal exploitation of AI will continue to expand, encompassing activities such as industrial espionage, disrupting production stability, compromising sensor functionality, and targeting centralized or distributed data management systems. The authors examine various forensic concerns associated with the AI criminal risks for industrial business models and propose criminalistic techniques that could ensure their security.
