Environmental factors play an important role in triggering or alleviating various types of headaches. While for some factors this relationship is clearer, for caffeine it remains uncertain. In patients with migraine, consumption of caffeine can trigger different reactions being worsening or triggering factor, headaches associated with withdrawal of caffeine, and headaches secondary to overuse of painkillers with caffeine. This is supported by the fact that both prodromal phase of migraine and coffee withdrawal are characterized by similar constellation of symptoms. On the other hand, there are certain types of headache such as hypnic headache, post-dural puncture headache, and spontaneous intracranial hypotension in which coffee is used as a therapeutic agent. Similarly, several studies have demonstrated that caffeine, especially when used in combination with analgesic treatment, can have beneficial effect in the treatment of tension-type headache.

摘要
