This chapter examines coffee as a beverage with addictive potential. Because the addictive potential of coffee originates from the presence of a psychoactive substance called caffeine in it, the focus of this examination is on caffeine. The attempt of this chapter is to make a complete evaluation of the three stages of the addiction cycle and the neuroadaptations that occur by the neurocircuitry in these stages. In this evaluation, the importance of changes in the levels of neurotransmitters, especially the increase in dopamine, and its impact on the brain’s reward system in creating drug abuse behaviors are highlighted. Additionally, there is a detailed exploration of the effect of caffeine on the central nervous system and how to create this effect. Meanwhile, by comparing the effect of caffeine on the central nervous system with other psychoactive substances, the same behavioral and mental effects of caffeine with these substances are emphasized due to the effect on facilitating dopaminergic neurotransmission. This chapter also discusses the effects of caffeine on mental health and neurodegenerative diseases with a combination of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Furthermore, by examining the acute and chronic consumption of caffeine, this chapter evaluates the health benefits and related health risks due to its consumption. Ultimately, by answering the question, Is coffee addiction real?, the chapter provides recommendations for coffee consumption.
