Non-allergic rhinitis (NAR) is a heterogeneous collection of different clinical sub-types primarily causing nasal symptoms such as rhinorrhea, post-nasal drip, nasal irritation, and sometimes nasal congestion. Traditionally, NAR was the diagnosis given for the combination of rhinitis symptoms and negative allergy testing. However, there is growing evidence of local allergic rhinitis causing nasal symptoms despite negative specific IgE in the sera or negative skin prick testing (SPT) for inhalant allergens. NAR tends to be associated with irritant triggers, such as smoke or perfume, and is most bothersome in a population older than those first experiencing allergic rhinitis (AR). Due to the heterogeneity and lack of a confirmatory test, the epidemiology and burden of disease of NAR is not well studied. However, NAR may affect a similar number of persons as AR and have a similar negative impact on quality of life (QOL).
