Asthma Phenotypes
摘要
Asthma is a heterogenous disease characterized by variable airflow limitation and airway inflammation. Different approaches have been used over the years to classify asthma into clinical, functional, molecular, and cellular phenotypes. Based on the type of inflammation, asthma is broadly divided into type-2 high and type-2 low asthma. Examples of type-2 high phenotypes include early-onset allergic, late-onset eosinophilic, sensitizer-induced occupational asthma, and aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD). Type-2 low phenotypes include obesity-associated, smoking-associated, irritant-induced occupational, paucigranulocytic, and neutrophilic asthma. Understanding of the asthma phenotypes at the clinical and molecular level is an essential component of precision and personalized management of asthma.
