Ocimum sanctum, generally recognized as Holy Basil or Tulsi, is a medicinal herb that has been used traditionally in various cultures for its potential health benefits. Ocimum sanctum herb has been reported to contain a number of active secondary metabolites. The phytochemical composition of Ocimum sanctum includes a variety of compounds, some of which contribute to its medicinal properties. Among them, flavonoids and phenolic compounds have been shown to have potential impacts on neurological and cardiovascular illnesses. In this study, the maximum total phenol, flavonoid, and tannin content of Ocimum sanctum leaf extract, prepared using different solvents such as ethanol, methanol, water, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and petroleum ether, was examined. Phytochemical and LC-MS analysis of different extracts showed the presence of several flavonoids, including rosmarinic acid, eupalitin, xanthomicrol, gardenin B, genkwanin, hymenoxin, demethylnobiletin, and polyphenols such as nepetoidin, eugenol, molludistin, orientin, ocimarine, basilimoside, cosmisiin, and ursolic acid. Upon comparative analysis, it is evident that the methanolic and ethanolic fractions contain the majority of the flavonoids and polyphenols described above. As a result, methanol and ethanol leaf extracts were shown to be the best extracts to employ in the development of new therapeutics utilizing Ocimum sanctum medicinal properties.
