This chapter gives preliminary information on the two publications, by Havard (The Modern Language Review, 67(4), 810–819, 1972) and Craik (Twentieth Century Literature, 14(3), 362–376, 1998), which deal specifically with the use of colour terms in Thomas’s poems, focusing on green and its relationship with golden, and also Hardy’s (Dylan Thomas: An Original Language. University of Georgia Press, 2000) discussion of Thomas as ‘the green poet’. It then goes on to examine briefly studies of colour expressions in the work of Ronsard (Davis, The Modern Language Review, 40(2), 95–103, 1945) and D. H. Lawrence (Nahal, The D. H. Lawrence Review, 8(2), 147–154, 1975), and also the work of Skard (Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, 90(3), 163–249, 1946) on colour in literature.
