There are 29 cases of the modification of a colour term (e.g. sky blue, sheep white), representing 13% of all the colour term instances. Modification of either black or white accounts for 16 (55%) of the total. Each instance has been discussed in the sections for the individual colours. We also examine the distribution of modification with respect to the dates of publication of the poems containing it, and find a clear boundary at 1939, poems composed after that date showing a higher density of modified terms. Of the total of 228 entities described, 69% are concerned with the natural world, 16% with the man-made world, the rest with minor categories. Within the natural world entities 68% are living, 32% non-living. Of the living entities 84% are moving, 16% static. Within the moving entities 64% are human, 36% animal (including bird). In the man-made world entities 56% are built, with 44% relating to other types of object. A rank ordering is established for the frequency of colour terms for each major entity type. Finally, we examine in more detail, in relation to Thomas’s main themes, the colours chosen by informants in Heller’s study in relation to particular qualities, feelings and emotions, picking out those associated with the most frequent colours in the poems, viz. green, black and white.
