The lithosphere comprises the solid layer which, along with the hydrosphere (water), biosphere (biota), atmosphere (air) and cryosphere (ice) makes up the terrestrial system. The interaction of these spheres through biogeochemical and hydrological cycles determines life on Earth, the chemical composition of air, water and soils and, therefore, the evolution of human societies.
