Demographic status signifies the level or standard of life experienced by a group of people living in a society. It is measured on the basis of certain parameters like gender, age, literacy, occupationOccupation, religion, etc. The aforesaid study primarily focuses on the gender discrepancies prevailing in terms of literacy and occupationOccupation in the Puruliya district and how such discrepancies can be ameliorated by implementing suitable policies. It is observed here that a major share of the educated populace is comprised of the masculine community who also possess a stronghold in the occupationOccupation sector as well. The female of the district is solely responsible for catering to the needs of the householdHousehold and their children, which requires a negligible academic qualification and expertise. Except for the marginal workers, the male population dominates in different economic sectors. They participate as main workers in agricultureAgriculture and cultivation as well as even migrate to other places to avail better opportunities and amenities. However, the existing scenario has overwhelmingly changed during the past decade as the women of Puruliya are now being educated and thus contributing to the labour force of the district’s economy. The state government’s initiatives like the Kanyashree-Prakalpa, Sabuj-sathi scheme, mid-day meal program in schools have helped to bring the feminine gender of the district to luminance. But the level achieved in terms of women’s education and workforce is still not satisfactory. Thus, it is the duty of the state government and the district authority to conduct full-fledged campaigns, starting from making surveys to ensuring that they are well aware and receiving proper information and assistance, therefore making the initiatives more successful and widespread. Moreover, the self-help groupsSelf-help groups (SHGs) of Puruliya can empower women from different blocks in blooming industries like sericulture and make them self-dependent.
