Effectiveness of National Rural Livelihood Mission on Socio-Economic Transformation of Beneficiary Women: A Case Study

The National RuralRural LivelihoodsLivelihood Mission (NRLM), a flagship program of the Indian government, aims to uplift ruralRural householdsHousehold by providing sustainable livelihoodLivelihood opportunities. This case study focuses on the unique socio-political and geographical landscape of the Kashmir region to examine NRLM's implementation and its impact on ruralRural householdsHousehold. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions using a three-stage sampling method, including blocks, Gram panchayats, and villages, utilizing beneficiaries and non-beneficiaries as the final units. The study utilized paired t-tests and independent samples t-tests to assess the scheme’s impact, alongside an EmpowermentEmpowerment Index to measure changes in women’s empowermentEmpowerment pre- and post-implementation. Findings indicate a positive economic impact and increased women’s autonomy and shared decision-making, promoting gender equity and family cohesion. The findings show a mean empowermentEmpowerment index for Ganderbal (56.25%), suggesting regional variations in NRLM’s effectiveness. The study stresses to consider localized strategies to maximize the program’s impact, ensuring equitable benefits across different areas. Enhanced focus on gender-specific needs and continuous monitoring can further strengthen the program’s effectiveness in empowering women and improving ruralRural livelihoodsLivelihood.
