Empowerment of Left-Behind Women: An Assessment of Socio-Demographic Variables in Rural Cooch Behar District, West Bengal

The study focuses on assessing the influence of socio-demographic variables on the empowermentEmpowerment of ruralRural left-behind women when male members of their families remain outstation for work. A sample of 398 married women aged between 20 and 60 years old who are either wives or mothers of the migrants has been purposively taken for the study by snowball sampling technique followed by an interview using a structured questionnaire. InclusionInclusion in family decision-making, inclusionInclusion in financial decision-making and inclusionInclusion in social participation have been considered as major indicators for assessing the overall empowermentEmpowerment of left-behind women. Ordinal regression has been run to determine the influence of socio-demographic variables on their inclusionInclusion in family decision-making; financial decision-making; participation and overall empowermentEmpowerment. The study results show that the education level of the women, type of the family, headship in the family, level of financial dependency and number of dependents in the family have appeared as significant predictors of overall empowermentEmpowerment of ruralRural left-behind women.
