Wetlands serve as vital ecosystems, providing essential services such as fishing, water supply for irrigation, flood regulation, water purification and habitat for diverse species. The Chaltia and Bishnupur beels (wetlands), located in the vicinity of Berhampore city, MurshidabadMurshidabad, are experiencing significant environmental stress due to urbanisation. This study aims to evaluate the impact of Berhampore city's expansion from 2001 to 2024 on the ecosystem services provided by these wetlands. By utilising a combination of remote sensing techniques, GIS analysis and field surveys, this research identifies key alterations in land use and land cover (LULC) patterns and assesses their implications for wetland functionality. The findings highlight significant encroachment, pollution and habitat degradation, which have resulted in the reduction of ecosystem services such as water quality regulation, biodiversity support and other services. Furthermore, local livelihoodsLivelihood, dependent on fishing and agricultureAgriculture, are also impacted due to these changes. This study emphasises the urgency for integrated urban planning and conservation strategies to mitigate further degradation of wetland services and restore the ecological balance. The recommendations provided here are aimed at promoting sustainable development, enhancing community participation and conserving these critical ecosystems amidst ongoing urban pressures. This research contributes to the broader understanding of urban-wetland interactions and underlines the need for policy interventions in the context of Eastern India's rapid urbanisation.
