Brittle Fracture Analysis Using Phase Field

Study of fracture behaviour in solid is complex phenomenon which has attracted researchers and they have proposed various methods and approaches to study crack propagation. Fracture in solids have led to catastrophic damage to property and it also cost life. Thus, prediction of crack initiation and its propagation becomes necessary so that failure in solid can be avoided. To study fracture, phase field modelling has been implemented in commercial finite element software Abaqus Standard which is built on variational approach of energy minimization. Different two-dimensional cases were taken to demonstrate the potential of the phase field method. Results obtained after implementation of phase field method in different cases were compared with previous work and are in agreement with existing literature. Method used, effectively capture crack nucleation, propagation and branching.
