The manufacturing sector in Germany, a vital component of its economy, faces a transformative phase amidst the digital revolution accelerated by the global pandemic. This paper highlights the integration of Business-to-Business (B2B) platforms into the industrial value chain, underlining their potential, complexities and implementation strategies. Evolving market dynamics and the surge in customized demands have reshaped traditional strategies, emphasizing the need for B2B platform adoption. Integrating B2B platforms promises streamlined processes, cost reductions and innovation opportunities. Yet, complexities arise from regulatory uncertainties, cybersecurity concerns and the absence of standardized practices. The current literature does not cover comprehensive methods that address how B2B platforms work within industrial settings. To close this gap, this paper proposes a three-phase methodology – ‘Observation’, ‘Understanding’ and ‘Implementation’ - designed to systematically study, comprehend and implement B2B platforms. The approach includes stakeholder analysis, risk identification, governance framework development and a maturity model to guide companies through platform integration. This comprehensive framework aims to provide tailored recommendations for companies navigating the complexities of B2B platform adoption. By addressing existing research gaps, this methodology strives to assist the manufacturing industry in effectively leveraging B2B platforms to enhance competitiveness in an increasingly digitalized landscape.
