Geotourism in the Era of Digital Communication: Developing a Model for Online Content Analysis Based on Portuguese Geoparks

Digital communication as a tool for marketing and promoting tourism is essential for the current generation of tourists. The Internet offers the opportunity to reach the global market and communicate a competitive tourist offer; however, there are few scientific studies that address this issue regarding the specific context of online information in the areas of geotourism, georesources, and in particular Geoparks. This article aims to develop a model for content analysis of online information available and presented on official websites of UNESCO Geoparks located in Portugal. The research results allow establishing a methodology for systematic content analysis and obtaining a model with applicability in Geopark websites. The study presents contributions to the entities responsible for the promotion of Geoparks in order to identify the level of navigability, usability, and interactivity as well as availability, accessibility, and relevance of the content that are determinant to project a holistic online image of geoheritage.
