AI and the Sense of Civic Duty
摘要
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a highly sophisticated tool that has been integrated into modern life. It is evolving at a rapid pace, challenging thus the skills and competencies traditionally cultivated by humans. In this paper, I outline a perspective on the subject shaped by transdisciplinary, philosophical, social, and political insights and guided by critical thinking and careful deliberations. The goal is to safeguard the human ability to choose and control, to maintain free will and self-regulation, and to preserve mental, emotional, and practical skills, to avoid being overwhelmed by technology. Humans already deeply engage with technology and benefit greatly from it, but they also have the responsibility to continue nurturing their intelligence, including emotional intelligence, as they are nevertheless sentient and intuitive beings guided by thoughts and actions. It is essential for them to remain involved and aware, able to prevent and recognize forms of technological manipulation. To center society around civic responsibility and the common good means preserving the sapiens’ responsibility for choices and actions, especially regarding the use of AI.
