The importance of ethics practices in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) design has never been clearer as society becomes increasingly immersed in artificial intelligence (AI). Despite a growing body of literature and the emergence of ethics toolkits and frameworks over the past decade, the adoption of these ethics practices within the HCI community remains disappointingly low. This paper explores the underlying reasons for this hesitancy among HCI design professionals, drawing upon results of a survey of design professionals. Historically, HCI designers have prioritized user advocacy and achieving good usability as their primary goals. With the rise of the internet and the proliferation of online businesses, the profession has evolved to embrace business success as another goal. This shift in goals can sometimes introduce ethical issues in the effort to attract and retain customers and make a business successful. This research examines this tension, analyzing the motivations and challenges faced by designers in integrating ethics frameworks into their practices. It ultimately argues for a renewed commitment to ethics in the HCI design process.

摘要
