This paper explores the impact of embedding sustainable design and sustainable business principles in core undergraduate experience design curricula, specifically Bentley University’s Fundamentals of Design course. By framing design education through the lens of the triple bottom line—people, planet, and profit—business and design students connect their work to sustainability principles such as the circular economy, resource efficiency, and social equity. They gain subject matter expertise in a growing area of business and design, making them attractive to employers. And the design department begins to educate on these important practices without justifying budget or staff for a dedicated sustainable design course.

摘要

This paper explores the impact of embedding sustainable design and sustainable business principles in core undergraduate experience design curricula, specifically Bentley University’s Fundamentals of Design course. By framing design education through the lens of the triple bottom line—people, planet, and profit—business and design students connect their work to sustainability principles such as the circular economy, resource efficiency, and social equity. They gain subject matter expertise in a growing area of business and design, making them attractive to employers. And the design department begins to educate on these important practices without justifying budget or staff for a dedicated sustainable design course.
