GlobeStick: Innovating Map Navigation Through Tactile Interaction and User-Centered Design

GlobeStick is an innovative tactile interface designed to enhance digital map navigation by offering precise and intuitive control for professionals in fields such as disaster management, geography, and meteorology. The system integrates a joystick, rotary encoder, and haptic feedback to enable smooth navigation and accurate zooming, addressing the limitations of traditional tools like a mouse or touchpad. A rechargeable battery ensures portability, allowing users to operate GlobeStick in various professional environments. Communication with digital map systems, such as Google Earth, is achieved through Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), ensuring low-latency, real-time interactions. Comparing GlobeStick to traditional input techniques, preliminary results showed a significant reduction in navigation time, with GlobeStick completing tasks 6.6% faster than the Mouse and 40% faster than the Laptop Touchpad. Additionally, GlobeStick demonstrated a 30% improvement in zoom accuracy over traditional methods, offering better precision than both the Mouse and Laptop Touchpad. Participants highlighted the intuitive nature of GlobeStick’s tactile interaction and its potential to reduce fatigue during prolonged use. Additionally, GlobeStick offers accessibility benefits for individuals with limited mobility, emphasizing inclusivity in its design. Beyond geospatial applications, GlobeStick serves as a prototype for future tangible user interfaces, with potential uses in virtual reality, 3D modeling, and smart home systems. By simplifying interaction with complex digital environments, GlobeStick represents a significant advancement in human-computer interaction, contributing to the development of user-centered, tangible interfaces that improve usability and accessibility.
