An Empirical Study of Video Duration on Users’ Discontinuous Sage Intention: Based on the TAM Model
摘要
Nowadays, new media applications are accompanying people’s daily life. With the continuous development of media technology, meanwhile, the problems like information overload and social fatigue in social media have gradually appeared. Accordingly, the habits and preferences of new media users have also shifted. Public statistics show that short video platforms, including tiktok, have experienced a crisis of user loss, while the number of users on video platforms such as Netflix has continued to increase. Whether users’ psychological perceptions during watching are affected by the information content and whether their behavioural intentions are influenced by the duration of the video, then, becomes the concern of this study. Based on the classical technology acceptance model, this study explored the correlation between perceived usefulness and ease of use on cognitive load and perceived fatigue. Meanwhile, two dimensions of information overload and information ambiguity were added to extend the model. And video duration was introduced to explore its effect on the behavioural intention to discontinue use. After building up the theoretical framework, this study carried out a quantitative approach by collecting data through online questionnaires. Through data analysis, this study found that information overload and ambiguity can positively affect video users’ cognitive load and perceived fatigue, while perceived usefulness and ease of use can have a negative effect; cognitive load and perceived fatigue can positively affect users’ intention of discontinuous behaviours; and users’ discontinuous usage intentions will decrease with the increase of video duration. Finally, based on the findings, this study provided some suggestions for the development of video platforms/applications.
