Nudging with Narrative Visualization: Communicating to a Student in the MOOC Courseware
摘要
In the rapidly evolving landscape of online education, Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) offer a unique platform for learning at scale. However, the challenge remains in effectively engaging students and guiding them through the vast array of content. This paper explores the concept of nudging the use of subtle interventions to influence student behavior through narrative visualization within MOOC courseware. By integrating narrative elements with information visualizations, we aim to create a more engaging, personalized, and motivating learning experience. This approach draws on the principles of narrative visualization to design narratives information that not only convey complex information but also subtly guide students toward desired learning behaviors, such as increased engagement, timely completion of tasks, and deeper understanding of content. The paper examines the theoretical underpinnings of nudging in digital learning environments and proposes a framework for the effective use of narrative visualization in MOOCs. Case studies and examples from current MOOC platforms are analyzed to demonstrate how narrative-driven visual cues can enhance student interaction, foster a sense of progress, and improve overall learning outcomes. Ultimately, this work contributes to the growing body of research on human-centered design in educational technology, offering practical insights for course designers and educators looking to optimize student engagement and retention in online learning environments. This study contributes a better grasp of how technologies such as narrative visualization, using different visual communication strategies, can deliver more complex messaging.
