The Kyoto Declaration adopted by the 14th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice emphasised the importance of efficient and evidence-based investigations. It encourages ‘the use and sharing of good practices on legally grounded, evidence-based interviewing methods designed to obtain only voluntary statements’ (Investigative Interviewing for Criminal Investigation). The practice of investigative interviewing has improved exponentially over the past number of decades as a result of collaboration between practitioners and scientists. Many practitioners, particularly in the law enforcement community, are increasingly embracing science-based protocols and principles. These interviewing protocols, based on scientific research and good practice provide the evidence-based interviewing methods emphasised by the Kyoto Declaration. This chapter will discuss interviewing protocols and introduce a science-based interviewing protocol that allow for the sharing of good practice and the obtaining of statements from victims, witnesses and suspects. Key components and techniques underpinning the protocol will be discussed and examples from real-life cases provided.
