Integrating sEMG and Cooperative Games to Enhance the Fun and Engagement of Home Fitness

Home fitness is a convenient and effective way to exercise; however, due to its lack of fun and interactivity, people generally have low motivation to participate. To address this issue, this study explores whether integrating surface electromyography (sEMG) technology with cooperative games can effectively enhance the enjoyment and engagement of home fitness. A total of 12 healthy adult participants were invited to complete three fitness modes: traditional fitness, sEMG-based single-player games, and sEMG-based cooperative games. Their experiences were evaluated using the Positive Affect and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS), the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and muscle activity data. The results indicate that both cooperative games and sEMG-based fitness significantly enhanced participants’ positive emotions, intrinsic motivation, and extrinsic motivation, while sEMG-based fitness also effectively reduced amotivation. Moreover, combining cooperative games and sEMG-based fitness demonstrated the most substantial improvement in positive emotions. This study confirms the practical benefits of integrating sEMG technology with cooperative games for home fitness and provides new directions and references for future product design.
