With the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC) into cultural heritage design, the roles of Cultural Heritage Professionals (CHPs) have evolved significantly. This study explores the roles and contributions of CHPs within AI-assisted cultural heritage design workflows, based on a workshop focused on Yanchuan Patchwork. By analyzing various data, including participants’ interactions, design outputs, and feedback, this study identifies three critical roles—cultural consultants, data providers and creators, and reviewers and evaluators—along with additional supporting roles. Additionally, the study highlights key challenges, such as limited engagement and the risk of cultural misinterpretation within AI-assisted workflows, stressing the critical importance of CHPs’ continuous involvement throughout the design workflow. Recommendations to enhance collaboration include recognizing the fluidity of CHPs’ roles, supporting their active participation, and ensuring seamless communication across design teams. This research provides valuable insights into the integration of CHPs within the evolving landscape of AI-assisted cultural heritage design workflows.
