Interactive AI-Driven Platform for the Traditional Kite Patterns Design

Kite-making is a traditional Chinese craft recognized as an important form of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). With deep historical roots, kite patterns often carry significant cultural symbolism, reflecting regional aesthetics and craftsmanship. However, with the rapid pace of modernization, traditional crafts like kite-making face challenges such as the decline in skilled artisans and reduced public interest, threatening their preservation and dissemination. Taking the iconic Beijing Swallow Kite as an example, this paper introduces a platform that preserves and evolves traditional kite-making heritage through the integration of generative artificial intelligence (GAI). To achieve this, we first conducted an in-depth analysis of the artistic elements of the Beijing Swallow Kite, including its shape, color, and patterns, to guide the preservation and reinterpretation of traditional kite designs. Based on this analysis, we designed and developed an interactive platform that allows users to create personalized kite designs. To support this, we trained a specialized AI model based on the unique features of the Beijing Swallow Kite. This AI model was then integrated into the platform, enabling the real-time generation of new kite patterns from user sketches. Evaluation results indicate that the platform effectively supports users in designing traditional kite patterns, allowing them to engage deeply with cultural heritage while experimenting with creative variations. Future work will focus on addressing ethical concerns related to the protection of cultural heritage and expanding the platform’s application to other forms of ICH.
