Agriculture is often regarded as the backbone of the Indian economy, serving as the fundamental pillar that sustains and propels the nation’s economic growth and development. Agriculture contributes approximately 18–20% to India’s GDP, acting as the lifeblood of the economy. Employing nearly half of the nation’s workforce, it underpins the economic vitality and sustenance of millions, reinforcing its status as the cornerstone of India’s prosperity. Agriculture undergoes a metamorphosis through the embrace of artificial intelligence. Enterprising AI applications empower precision farming, optimizing yields, conserving resources, and forecasting market dynamics with unparalleled precision. This harmonious fusion of tradition and innovation heralds a dawn where agriculture propels economic and technological frontiers. Krishna, a smallholding farmer in Telangana, India, earns $120 per month, grappling with unpredictable weather, pest infestations, and high-interest loans. Post-harvest, he faces 40% wastage, logistics issues, and strict market requirements, trapping him in subsistence farming. The AI4AI initiative, launched by the World Economic Forum India and the Telangana government, integrates AI, drones, and blockchain to aid farmers like Krishna. A pilot in Khammam district increased incomes by $800 per acre per crop cycle, improved yields, and reduced pesticide and fertilizer use. This success led to expanding the initiative to 500,000 farmers, showing AI’s potential to enhance security of food, economic stability and sustainability in agriculture. Farmers may initially resist AI in farming due to fears of technology replacing tradition, loss of control over their land, and complexity in adoption. Mistrust towards unfamiliar innovations adds to the scepticism, especially if AI seems inaccessible. Overcoming these barriers demands trust-building through education, showcasing AI benefits, and involving farmers in co-designing solutions.
