Transmedia Storytelling and Alternative National Narratives: The Case of Cypriotism in the Greek Cypriot Community
摘要
The chapter examines the contested nationalist narratives in Cyprus, focusing on Cypriotism as a counter-hegemonic form of nationalism, as it is expressed through the divergent historical interpretations located in the Greek Cypriot community. Utilizing the concept of transmedia storytelling, the chapter argues that Cypriotism crafts its narrative through diverse media, forming a fragmented yet complementary mosaic of an alternative national story. In doing so, Cypriotism challenges hegemonic ethnonationalism by redefining collective belonging, in a manner that encompasses both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The chapter concludes by noting nationalism’s role in contemporary social relations, emphasizing the need for transmedia studies to engage in comparative analyses across cultural and political contexts, in order to comprehend nationalism’s evolving nature in the twenty-first century.
