Aromatic amines listed as HPHC include 4-aminobiphenyl, 1-aminonaphthalene, 2-aminonaphthalene, o-anisidine, 2,6-dimethylaniline, and o-toluidine. These compounds and other aromatic amines such as 3-aminobiphenyl, benzidine, and several alkyl-anilines are analyzed by various methods in cigarette smoke and in oral tobacco products. The most common methods used for this purpose are presented in this chapter. A short discussion on the generation of aromatic amines in cigarette smoke is also included.
