A number of volatile compounds such as acrylonitrile, benzene, 1,3-butadiene, isoprene, and toluene are listed as HPHCs and are frequently analyzed in cigarette smoke. Together with these five compounds, other HPHCs that are volatile are usually including ethylene oxide, vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, furan, etc. are also analyzed in smoke. Several methods for the collection of volatile toxicants from cigarette smoke that are present in the gas phase, and their methods of analysis are described in this chapter.
