The era of multiparty elections resulted in changes of government, but all governments, no matter under what party name, contained senior figures and leaders from the Kaunda era. The shadow of the ‘old man’ never left. Kaunda outlived two Presidents who died in office. Discontent with a growing Chinese presence became an election issue. The economy became subject to spikes and falls in the international copper market. Finally, in 2016, the elections were won by a party not led by a figure from the Kaunda era, but the new President Edgar Lungu promptly set about an international borrowing spree that would cost the country much in the future. The probity of elections was also becoming an issue. People turned to religion and a multiplicity of Christian churches sprang up.
