The ability to interact effectively with computers allows for efficient productivity and communication. However, a portion of the population with upper limb mobility issues including those with motor control difficulties (cerebral palsy, stroke, muscular dystrophy), vision impairment, and upper limb dysfunction, struggle when accessing computers. It becomes even more difficult for persons with speech impairment. We are seeking to better understand the research gaps in the design of technology for the employment of persons with speech impairment. The process involved a co-creation workshop centred around persons with lived experiences. They spoke while others listened to a podcast which was followed by a presentation that included the state of current research. Breakout sessions with interdisciplinary engagement provided insights into themes that must be discussed when designing devices, systems, and policies. Themes included: technological accommodations in employment, inclusive policies and training, design and ethics, barriers and challenges, community and social engagement, and vision for future technologies.
