The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) has been framed as a technological revolution capable of enhancing efficiency, productivity, and accessibility, including for disabled people. However, this discourse often obscures the deeper systemic injustices AI perpetuates, particularly through ableism, colonialism, and neoliberal economic structures. In this book, Beyond Tech Fixes: Towards an AI Future Where Disability Justice Thrives, we challenge the prevailing assumption that AI can be “fixed” by improving datasets, adding ethical guidelines, or refining bias-detection algorithms. Instead, we argue that AI, in its current form, operates as a tool of corporate and state control, reinforcing systems of exclusion and marginalization under the guise of progress. We examine AI’s complicity in technocolonialism, digital colonialism, and the military-industrial complex, demonstrating how AI is weaponized to maintain Western hegemony and subjugate the Global South. This is evident in AI-driven surveillance, autonomous weapons, and algorithmic decision-making systems that disproportionately harm disabled people, racialized communities, and those resisting colonial and imperial structures. Furthermore, we critique the ideology of technoableism, which presents AI as a solution to disability while reinforcing ableist notions of independence and productivity. Rather than liberating disabled people, AI often exacerbates their erasure, restricting access to social, political, and economic rights. Through a critical disability justice lens, we call for a fundamental reimagining of AI—one that resists its deployment as an instrument of oppression and instead centers justice, accountability, and decolonial futures. We propose an alternative vision for AI development that challenges corporate and state power, foregrounds lived experiences of disabled people, and fosters collective resistance against technological and systemic injustices. By moving beyond the narrow focus on technological fixes, we advocate for an AI future that prioritizes human interdependence, social equity, and the dismantling of structures that oppress marginalized communities worldwide.
