German radio’s treatment of the Battle of Berlin provides the general background. It was characterized by a mixture of threats, fear and over-optimism. Attention is paid to the intensification of the “European” propaganda line with Berlin depicted as the vanguard in the struggle against Bolshevism. With the breakdown of communications German domestic radio was split up into two, later three, groups. There is an account of how Nazi radio handled Hitler’s last birthday. The dogged “carrying on” spirit of Nazi domestic radio is shown in the schedules with the continued inclusion of the long-running series. The role of radio in the anti-Nazi coup attempt in Munich is described. The first veiled admissions of defeat are handled, as well as the editions of the daily magazine, “Mirror of the Times” on 30 April and its treatment of May Day, just before the announcement of Hitler’s death.
