The Resilience of Populations to the Risks of Flooding, in the Context of Climate Change: What Level of Vulnerability of the Population in Ziguinchor (Senegal)?

Urban flooding has become a frequent issue in many African cities in recent years. The methods for assessing susceptibility to floods are diverse and intricate, as various situations result in different understandings of crucial terms. This variability impacts the interpretation of results in research environments. This variability impacts the interpretation of findings in research settings. This study sought to evaluate vulnerability indicators and establish a comprehensive model for vulnerability assessment. Vulnerability was explored across six dimensions: social, physical, economic, environmental, institutional, and attitudinal. The technique was used in six sites in Ziguinchor, selected for their elevated flood vulnerability, where a practical investigation was carried out. Researchers conducted a survey in households and created metrics for each aspect using distinct indicators. The findings emphasize the various factors that impact the susceptibility to flooding in the six urban areas. The level of vulnerability to flooding across different study sites differed greatly (t = 73.492 and p-value <0.0001 at the 95% confidence level). In Ziguinchor, approximately 45.3% of households that were surveyed showed high levels of vulnerability, whereas 13.7% exhibited very low vulnerability. The suggested approach to evaluate vulnerability was tested and proven to be effective.
