A Sustainable Decision Support Framework for Optimal Site Selection of Solar Powered Electric Vehicle Charging Station

Fossil fuels are of significant concern not only to air quality but also to the climate, which eventually affects human well-being. Mumbai mainly depends on imported petroleum, which should change for environmental solutions. Solar power can potentially help urban sustainability and result in fewer courted emissions of carbon. Wide acceptance of electric vehicles determined through the sustainability and conveniences of applicable charging points. With the increasing demand for electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) powered by solar energy, this study aims to provide a decision framework in practice to identify optimum positions in setting up EVCS that are sustainable in nature. To pinpoint optimal locations, the research uses Multi Influencing Factor (MIF) weights based on the relationships between various factors. These weights are incorporated to a Geographical Information System (GIS) to conduct weighted overlay analysis. The Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) is employed to allocate ranking according to suitability index. The findings highlight that zone with suitability index values ranging from 307.625 to 469.086 are the best choices for placing EVCS. The sensitivity analysis shows the proximity to road, business establishments and solar radiation are the dominant factors to delineate solar based EVCS. This proposed methodology provides a practical solution to address challenges related to sustainable EVCS, especially in situations with high uncertainty. The results serve as a valuable tool for administrators and, policymakers assisting them in making informed decisions to future development and strategic initiatives.
