At-home DNA testing and data sharing have gained popularity in recent years. To ensure public understanding, foster informed decision-making, and promote a balance between the potential benefits of DNA testing/data sharing and safeguarding individuals’ privacy, it is important to engage in effective risk communication. We take a crucial step in this direction by designing targeted video-based risk communication that contains comprehensive and transparent information regarding the potential risks and benefits of at-home DNA testing and data sharing. To test the effectiveness of this informational video, we conducted a user study. Our findings highlight the crucial role of risk communication in shaping public attitudes and behaviors towards at-home DNA testing and data sharing, as we observed a significant shift in participants’ decision-making. This underscores the importance of clear, concise, and accessible information in guiding individuals towards making informed decisions about their DNA data. Our findings have critical implications for a variety of stakeholders, including those engaged in providing DNA testing services, privacy policymakers, and public health communicators.

摘要
