Since 1959, when Pitanguy presented a new mastoplasty technique for the treatment of hypertrophic breasts, many other procedures have been developed that have further improved surgical outcomes. Pitanguy’s contribution marked a new era in the field, introducing innovative concepts—particularly the emphasis on surgical demarcation based on his landmark point “A”—which allowed surgeons to design the breast shape using their own creativity. He avoided the use of prefabricated templates, instead emphasizing individual freedom in surgical planning and marking. His technique involves no cutaneous undermining, minimizes the creation of “dead space,” and is associated with a low incidence of complications. Due to its high-quality outcomes, Pitanguy’s technique gained widespread popularity. It is not only easy to learn and perform but also well-suited for cases involving breast asymmetry as well as moderate to severe breast hypertrophy.
